Boorman's back for another By Any Means

ONE of the world's best-known motorcyclists is heading back to Australia to launch his latest book.

Actor Charley Boorman, who became famous for his 'round-the-world motorcycle adventures with Ewan McGregor, will launch his Right to the Edge: By Any Means (pictured) in Sydney next month.

He will then retrace his route in the book up the coast of Queensland, starting with a swap meet at motorcycle customisers Deus ex Machina in Sydney on November 21.

The new book takes up where Boorman left off in the previous By Any Means book, DVD and TV series about his trip from his home in Ireland to Sydney by any means of transport he could find from elephants to jet skis.

Right to the Edge follows his journey in May/June this year from Sydney to Tokyo via Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan and Japan, travelling on quad bikes, hovercrafts, wooden scooters, canoes, paragliders and his favourite mode of transport, motorcycle.

The By Any Means series follows his successful Long Way Round and Long Way Down series with McGregor and his solo effort to conquer the famous and gruelling Dakar Rally in Race to Dakar.

What better way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Sony's iconic Walkman than to ask a teenager for some feedback on the device?

The BBC couldn't think of one, and neither can I.

I like to imagine that the experience was similar to an archaeologist rediscovering how a recently excavated artifact was employed thousands of years ago. But I'm well aware that it must have been different for 13-year-old Scott Campbell, who co-edits his own news Web site. For one, teenage impatience must have stood in the place where I fantasize scientific curiosity should have been.

"My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day," Campbell wrote. "He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realized he meant that big. It was the size of a small book."

Sure enough, people on the street noticed the antique clinging from his belt with amusement and friends on his school bus were quick to come up with some witty remark.

Campbell went on to criticize the portable cassette player's size, appearance, functionality and the "hissy backtrack and odd warbly noises."

Even when he discovered the cassette had more music on the other side (it took him three days), Campbell was still disappointed it could only hold a small fraction of what an iPod can.

"Did my dad ... really ever think this was a credible piece of technology?"

To play the game, click on one of the four definitions (.little,. .old,. .big,. or .yellow.) that you think is correct. If you get it right, FreeRice donates 10 grains of rice to help end hunger. In the example above, you would want to click on .little,. which means .small.. You will then get a chance to do another word the same way. You can play as long as you like and donate as much rice as you like. When you are finished, you do not have to do anything.your donation is already counted.

How does the FreeRice program work?

FreeRice has a custom database containing knowledge questions at varying levels of difficulty. There are levels appropriate for beginners and levels that will challenge the most scholarly professors. In between are levels suitable for students of all ages, business people, homemakers, doctors, truck drivers, retired people. everyone!

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level. It starts by giving you questions of increasing difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. I'm halfway asleep so feel free to ignore my rambling. I was watching the Animal Planet channel a minute ago when it went to commercial. They ran a Fox Reality spot. Which has two or three clips from LWD running through it. I've seen it three times now but Ewan flew by so quickly I thought I was seeing things.
